Facts About Painting
You would have to go a long way to find someone who didn’t enjoy painting when they were a kid, playing in the paint and creating your own masterpiece. However painting your house or office just isn’t as easy or as fun. Let’s just say it isn’t finger painting. You need to make sure you get the right type of paint and that the colours suit your home or office. And then there is all the prep work!
It is easier to let a professional deal with your painting job and for you to sit back and enjoy the memories of you childhood painting days.
Compared to other household items, paint can improve the look and durability of your home better than any other home product. Paint can add colour and interest to the interior and exterior walls highlighting detail and features, and most important of all, protect what they cover.
Paint is made up with pigments for colour, a resin or binder for adherence, driers and a base (water or solvent-oil). Water-based paints are at least 30 percent pigment and contain special, high quality thickeners. Generally, price is a good measure of quality, since high quality paints contain advanced amounts of superior ingredients.
Exterior paints are usually more expensive than interior paint because they use more durable, more costly pigments and resins.
There are two types or house paints: water-based (acrylic) and solvent-based (oil). Water-based paint is thinned with water.
Solvent-based is thinned with turpentine or a similar solvent.
Because solvent-based paints dry to a harder finish and adhere better to new wood, poorly prepared surfaces and metal, they have been traditionally used for the exterior of houses where durability was important. But because the solvents contain and emit noxious fumes, air standards have forced the development and use of a variety of water-based alternatives. Water-based paints are now the preferred paint for the exteriors because they dry faster and are less likely to crack and peel plus emit little or no offensives fumes, and are much easier to clean up.
